Important Information about 2012-2013 Cal Grants

The Governor is proposing to reduce by nearly half the Cal Grant maximum award of $9,708 to $5,472 for students attending California’s independent, nonprofit schools. This proposed change puts financially deserving, academically qualified students at risk. The Governor's proposed Cal Grant cut will apply to both incoming and returning Cal Grant students.

All Cal Grant offers will be set at $9,708 but are subject to change based on the Governor's proposal.  We will be organizing a call to action for all students at CBU to contact their state representatives along with the Governor. You can help stop the cut! Take a stand and let your voices be heard!  We will be providing you with a Student Toolkit on what steps you can take to join us in this important cause to save our Cal Grants.

Changes to 2012-2013 FAFSA

When using FAFSA on the Web, students and parents of dependent students who indicate they filed federal income tax returns will be encouraged to retrieve their IRS income data to populate the appropriate FAFSA fields.

The Department of Education has stated that if you choose not to use the IRS data retrieval process, before being allowed to proceed with completing your application you will be informed that:

  • Your application may be selected for verification
  • If selected, you will be asked to provide a copy of your and your parent’s IRS Tax Transcripts or return to the FAFSA to allow the IRS Data Process.
    • The IRS is currently processing the IRS Transcripts within 10-15 business days.  We recommend the IRS data retrieval process as this correction to the FAFSA will only take 3 business days.
    • We can no longer accept copies of the 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ.

The IRS data retrieval process will be available February 1, 2012 and we encourage you to wait to complete your FAFSA until after this date.

If you are not given the option to use the IRS data retrieval because you have not filed or for other reasons, we ask that you complete the FAFSA with the most accurate information available.

If you or your parents have an IRA distribution that they are reporting using the IRS data retrieval, you need to insure that you exclude any amount that is a rollover.   The IRS data retrieval process will not provide the amount that is considered a rollover and this may inflate your EFC.

Please review your FAFSA prior to submission.
