The Angry Jesus in Mark
1:41
Eugene
and Billie Yeager Center, Room B258 at 2:00 p.m.
When Jesus heals a leper in
Mark 1:40-45, some early manuscripts state that Jesus was moved with anger, not
compassion. Most English translations prefer “compassion” while most textual
specialists and commentators on Mark consider “anger” the best reading of verse
41.
This presentation will
explore the manuscript evidence for both readings and a new theory that this
variant reading possibly arose in Latin due to the emotional ambiguity of the
Greek verb splanchnistheis (normally translated as “moved with compassion”). The
presentation will also argue that “anger” is the best reading of the text and
explain such a reading in light of the context of Mark.
