Failure to repay your Perkins Loan will have a direct effect on your credit history and negatively impacts the future of CBU.

When is my loan, considered delinquent?

You are in default when you stop paying on your student loan.  Failure to make payment when due, or to submit to CBU documentation of eligibility for deferment, forbearance or cancellation on or before the due date of a payment, can cause your loan to be declared in default.

Why should I not default on my Federal Perkins Loan?
  • Late charges, collection costs and litigation costs may be assessed to the maximum amount determined by the Promissory Note.
  • A defaulted Perkins Loan can be assigned to a Collection Agency, at which time the entire unpaid loan amount, including interest and up to 50% collection fees can be assessed, along with attorney's fees.  Your federal and state income tax may be withheld.
  • A defaulted Perkins Loan will be reported to a national credit bureau and will remain on your credit report for 7-years.  This could prevent you from buying a house or car in the future.
  • Deferment and Cancellation opportunities may be withheld.
  • You lose all eligibility for any future Title IV Financial Aid, including but not limited to Pell Grant, SEOG, Federal Direct or Federal Family Educational Loans.
  • A hold will be placed on your student account, preventing release of transcripts, diploma or future registrations.
  • The Federal Perkins Loan is a revolving fund.  If your loan is not paid, CBU is unable to award Perkins Loans to future students.  Additionally, if too many students default on their Perkins Loan, the government may revoke CBU's authorization to offer Federal Perkins Loans.
